What changes the PH of water?

pH of a water depends on many fectors. Main fectors are various compounds present in to the water and the gases dissolve in water. Typically the compunds with more hydoxyl ion will make water more alkaline. adding or substracting these compund will change ph of water. By far the most important influences are breathing plants and animals and plant photosynthesis. All submerged plants and animals, including algae, are constantly removing oxygen dissolved in water and excretion of carbon dioxide during normal breathing. In addition to breathing during the day all the plants, which include all forms of algae, active photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide water and use solar energy to convert simple organic carbon compounds - clever!

As we have already said, the carbon dioxide in solution is slightly acidic, so that plants remove the water becomes more alkaline. The sun ever algae - the more alkaline The water will become. These two processes, respiration and photosynthesis, exercise alongside the other, to being the dominant photosynthesis during the day. Thus, during daylight hours plants have a net alkalinizing concern. However, during the night, stopping photosynthesis in plants, but normal respiration continues, so now that they remove oxygen from the water and excrete carbon dioxide under normal breathing (both for "oxygenating plants), with a net acidifying effect. In low buffering capacity of water it can cause large diurnal fluctuations (over 24 hours) pH.

Even reasonably well-buffered water may have a moderate variation of pH during the day - be more alkaline in the evening. Therefore, the time of day you take the reading is important.

The other important factor affecting the pH is nitrification, which tends to have a slight tendency to acidify the water and the removal of 'buffering' capacity or water hardness.
